(Preschool to Grade 3)
Travel back in time and explore the Age of Dinosaurs through various
hands-on activities. What did these creatures look like? How big were
they? Students will play the role of paleontologists and search for
hidden bones and fossils! Discover what dinosaurs lived in this area.
Your program includes a dinosaur related tour of the OTS Heavy Oil
Science Centre. Advanced Dinosaur Dreams is available for students
whose knowledge is extensive.
(Grade 1 to Grade 6)
Why do birds fly? What's the difference between an insect and a
spider? Learn the answers to these questions and more unusual facts
about the animal kingdom while exploring the intriguing Discovery
Modules. Students will also learn about ecosystems, habitats, and
animal adaptations while viewing the wonders of the Fuchs Wildlife
Exhibit. This interactive program is adapted for each grade level.
(Grade 4 to Grade 6)
This program takes place in the interactive and educational base of
the OTS Heavy Oil Science Centre. Squirt, a droplet of heavy oil,
leads you through the exciting journey of the oil industry. Learn
about the drilling procedures, transportation and storage to its
refining and final consumer products and how exactly trilobites are
related to tractors. Through a variety of discovery-oriented
activities, explore the experiments in "Squirt's Science in a Tote"!
(Grade 7 & Up)
With the help of our knowledgeable volunteers, this interactive
program takes you through the Heavy Oil Industry. Our volunteers have
first hand experience in the industry and each will share their area
of expertise in the OTS Heavy Oil Science Centre during this program.
Students will acquire a better understanding of the oil industry.
This program ends with a question/answer activity based on the OTS
Heavy Oil Science Centre.
(Grade 3 & Up)
Where did the idea for snowshoes come from? What birds and animals
have feet that act like snowshoes? Trek through the winter trails of
Weaver Park on snowshoes! Search for clues and use your observations
skills to solve the mysteries of nature while the students are
engaged in active learning fun. This program includes a tour of Fuchs
Wildlife Exhibit. Please ensure students are dressed weather
appropriately as this is an outdoor winter program. This program's
activities are dependent upon weather conditions.
Snowshoes are available for rental by schools/youth organizations for a 48 hour period at $2.50/pair. Youth and senior sizes are available. Snowshoes must be returned dry.
(Preschool to Grade 5)
Preschool/Kindergarten - explore primary colors and color awareness, search for "people in paintings" in the Imhoff Galleries and complete your visit in the studio with a creative "masterpiece".
Grade 1 - explore color in four types of paintings: portraits, landscapes, historical paintings and still life paintings in a gallery atmosphere. The studio experience blends these observations into a printmaking experience to culminate your visit.
Grade 2 - the cultural experience in Grade two refines the "color search" into warm and cool colors and looking for people "near and far" to introduce basic perspective and the horizon line. A mural "masterpiece" is completed in the studio.
Grade 3 - search for portraits, landscapes, historical paintings and still life paintings using the Imhoff Galleries as well as current exhibitions in both our Community and Travelling galleries. The studio experience becomes a painting adventure in "tints and shades".
Grade 4 - is based on portraits as a likeness of a real person, how that person looks or feels. Students will learn about portraits and how artists capture a likeness of a person. Each student will then draw a portrait.
Grade 5 - is based on still life in a comparison of realism
and contemporary forms of painting, including Picasso's cubism.
Students will be guided through gesture, line and essence drawing
exercises to explore a still life setting.
(Grades 4 & Up)
Masks have been around for centuries! Masks can be artful
explorations of line, color, texture and imagination. Using plaster
strips and a plastic facial form each student will create a plaster
mask. Students will learn about and understand the functions of masks
in fantasy and reality. The masks will be taken back to your
classroom ready to be painted and decorated.
Available Year Round (Grades 6 & Up)
Learn the basics of making pysanky - the traditional art of Ukrainian
Easter Egg decorating! Patterns are drawn onto a raw egg with wax,
which then protects the covered areas from the dye that is applied.
By repeating this process with two-three colors of dye, a
multi-colored pattern is built up. Finally, the wax is removed to
reveal the colors that were covered up at each stage. Each student
will have a beautiful work of art!
(Grades 6 & Up)
Explore the medium of Acrylic paint on canvas. Learn the basics of
balancing between the intuitive and analytical approach to design.
Explore the language of art-color, shape, line, value and create an
expressive masterpiece! Each student will take away an acrylic
painting on stretched canvas ready for exhibition!
(Grade 5 & Up) Maximum of 25 students per class
Students will gain a basic understanding of the properties of this
very versatile medium and learn the three basic hand building
methods, tools of the trade, tricks and techniques. Class projects
can be structured to focus on functional or sculptural concepts.
A minimum of 10 days of drying and firing time is required. Classes
will be notified when their pottery is ready for pick up.
Learn the basics of balancing between the intuitive
and analytical approach to design while exploring the free-flowing
expression of watercolor! Using color, shape, line and value students
will create a masterpiece.
(Grade 6 & Up)
A popular series of drawing workshops based on work developed by Dean
Bauche of the Allen Sapp Gallery in North Battleford, Saskatchewan.
This set of sessions implements a "science centre"
approach, using drawing stations to develop your artistic perception
and ability to draw. The results are immediate, tangible and
gratifying. It is not necessary to take all sessions. Classes,
however, must have been exposed to Level I before progressing to the
next level.
(Preschool to Grade 3)
Experience the exciting lives of the Barr Colonists as we step back
in time! Students role-play the lives of the first pioneers as the
register their homestead at the Immigration Office, shop at the
General Store and spend "a day a school". Students will
learn about the roles of family members and past technologies.
Includes updated interactive artifact demonstrations as students take
part in some of the tasks that were a part of the daily lives of
early pioneers.
(Grades 4 to 6)
Through traditional story telling and interactive activities,
students will learn the cultural history of the First Peoples in
Saskatchewan and Alberta. Methods of communication, transportation,
family roles and responsibilities as well as games and celebrations
will be explored. Highlights of this program include, artifact
display, traditional games, crafts and set up of our Hand-crafted Tipi.
(Grades 5 & Over)
With the assistance of our knowledgeable volunteers, you will learn
how technology has changed over the years and how it remains the
same. Highlights of this interactive program include a
"close-up" look at the steam engine and antique cars,
blacksmith equipment and hand tool demonstrations, early telephone
and switchboard demonstrations, and much more, as artifacts become
available. Demonstrations vary, depending on the availability of our
volunteers on the day of your program booking.
